Man detained for ‘throwing’ animal carcass in front of Ahmedabad housing society

The Ahmedabad Police’s Detection of Crime Branch detained one person for allegedly throwing an animal carcass in front of a residential society in Isanpur of Ahmedabad Friday.According to police, a decapitated head of an animal was found outside the main gate of Bhagwan Nagar society in the Govindwadi area of Isanpur around 8:30 am on Friday. Another plastic bag containing almost 50 kilograms of the animal carcass was found dumped at the public road outside Arihant Jewellers showroom near Isanpur overbridge around the same time. “Around 8:30 am, I saw a crowd of people assemble at Bhagwan Nagar society gate where on the main road, a decapitated head of a bovine was thrown. Similarly, another bag was found dumped on the road outside Arihant Jewellers containing an animal carcasses. We called the police immediately. Eyewitnesses told us that they saw an unidentified man riding a scooter and throwing animal meat before running away,” said Rohit Desai, a resident of neighbourhood, who is involved into animal husbandry. Taken cognizance of Desai’s complaint, police lodged an FIR under IPC section 278 for making atmosphere noxious to health and sections of the Prevention of Cruelty against Animals Act and Gujarat Animal Preservation Act at Isanpur police station. By Friday evening, a team of DCB detained Mohammad Faizan Shaikh (26), a resident of Vatva in Ahmedabad, for allegedly throwing the animal carcasses.“Based on technical input, we picked up Shaikh from Rakhial area with his scooty. CCTV footage also showed Shaikh using his scooty to dump the animal carcasses. He is being interrogated regarding the motive and then handed over to Isanpur police station,” said a senior official of Ahmedabad DCB.

The group of  Dalits that started a yatra from Ahmedabad to Delhi last week, carrying a specially designed a 1,000-kilogram brass coin, with a message to the political class that untouchability exists even after 75 years of independence, was stopped from entering Haryana Sunday night as they did not have permission from the Haryana and Delhi police to enter, according to an official.After failing to get entry to Haryana from Rajasthan, the group that wanted to donate the coin for the new Parliament building, decided to return to Ahmedabad from where it started the yatra on August 1.The yatra was launched by noted Dalit rights group, Navsarjan Trust, from its campus in Nani Devti village last week.Speaking with The Indian Express, Martin Macwan of Navsarjan Trust said that the yatra comprised 375 people, including 104 women, from 14 states.“After completing the Rajasthan part of our yatra, we were to enter Haryana from Sajapur border to reach Delhi last night (Sunday). However, the Haryana police had deployed huge police force with water canons and boulders at the border to stop us from entering. The traffic on the highway was also affected due to this. They showed us a letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs with clear instruction to not allow us enter (Haryana and Delhi),” said Macwan.Adding that they decided to stay on the road for 24 hours before returning to Gujarat, Macwan said, “They (Haryana police) offered us a stay in a guest house and food, but we politely refused. We spent the night on the side of the road and will leave for Gujarat tonight (Monday).”According to Macwan, they got police permission from Rajasthan and the yatra passed from the state under police protection, while they did not get formal permission from the authorities in Haryana or Delhi.According to Inspector General of Police, South Range, Haryana, Ravi Kiran, the group had 260 persons. “Delhi police did not give them permission to enter Delhi. Haryana government, too, did not give them permission (to carry out the yatra). And therefore, we did not allow them to enter. Due to security reasons, we did not allow them in,” said Ravi Kiran.The coin that the group wanted to donate for the new parliament building has a message on untouchability along with pictures of Dr BR Ambedkdar and Gautam Budhha engraved on either sides. It was made from brass utensils donated by people, majority Dalits, from different parts of the country and was made by two artists from Odisha and Delhi.The message on the coin — in Hindi and English — says, “Will the 1947 dream of untouchability-free India be a reality in 2047?”. The word untouchability has also been written in 15 Indian languages on one side of the coin.Last month, while declaring details of the yatra, Macwan stated that they thought of the initiative to remind the political class that untouchability still exists in the country even after 75 years of independence, which he said was a collective failure of all the political parties.The group had also collected 20 lakh coins of Re 1 from different parts of the country and wanted to donate it as a contribution from the poor people. The initiative was named Bhim Rudan (the cries of Dr BR Ambedkar).

Two students from Gujarat have secured ranks 29 and 40 at the all-India level in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main results released by the National Testing Agency (NTA) Monday.Surat’s Adajan resident Mahit Rajesh Gadhiwala, who will turn 18 years in 10 days, secured rank 29 and topped the state, while Sharvil Patel from Ahmedabad secured rank 40.Busy preparing for the JEE-Advanced exam, which will be conducted by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay on August 28, Mahit was quick and brief when he spoke to The Indian Express. “My focus is entirely on JEE Advanced and I am aiming for Computer Science at IIT Bombay,” Mahit said, adding he was happy with the 29th rank.The only child to dentist parents, Rajesh and Premal, Mahit would become the first engineer in the family, his father said.Recently, he won a silver medal at the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held online and hosted by Tianjin China amid the Covid pandemic at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai.Mahit had topped the state in the JEE Main Session 1 results that was announced on July 11. However, being in a “no communication zone” owing to the Olympiad, Mahit got to know about his feat only two days later on July 13.Seventeen-year-old Patel also comes from a family of doctors—his father is an orthopaedic surgeon who has a private practice, mother is a gynaecologist and an associate professor at SVP Hospital in Ahmedabad and his elder brother is a third year MBBS student at BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad.“Since childhood, I was inclined to application of concepts and more interested in Mathematics. My parents have always been supportive of my choices and never forced any decisions on me,” Sharvil says.Sharvil is focussed on JEE Advanced and also is aiming for Computer Science at IIT Bombay. However, he says he expected a better rank.“I would suggest all aspirants to not do blind hard work but a planned, targeted and systematic preparation module. Do not take exam pressure but (consider it) as a platform to prove yourself. Also, keep reading NCERT manuals and give more time to Chemistry as it is about memorising than maths and physics,” Sharvil says.Four students from Ahmedabad featured in the top 200 ranks, while 10 found themselves in the top 500 and 18 students in top 1000.A total of 10,26,799 unique candidates registered of which 9,05,590 appeared in JEE-Main this year. Of these, 8,72,970 registered for the June examination of which 7,69,604 appeared for the test.Similarly, in the July JEE-Main, 6,22,034 had registered of which 5,40,242 took the exam. In both the June and July examinations, the common students who registered were 4,68,205, while those who took the examination were 4,04,256.The top 2.5 lakh students selected on the basis of JEE-Main will be declared eligible for the advanced examination. The result of the advanced examination will be released on September 11.

Govt approves town planning schemes for Ahmedabad, Surat, Bhavnagar metropolis

AHMEDABAD: The state government has approved seven town planning schemes for Ahmedabad, Surat and Bhavnagar metropolis. The Seven town planning schemes which has been approved four preliminary TP schemes for Surat and one each preliminary TP schemes for Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar also includes one draft TP for Bavla. Government has approved Surat Municipal Corporation preliminary TP scheme No. 27 Bhatar- Majura, Scheme No. 51 Dabholi, Scheme No. 50 Ved- Katargam and Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA) preliminary TP scheme No. 85 Sarthana-Pasodra-Laskana. As a result of approval of these 3 preliminary TP schemes of Surat Municipal Corporation, a total of 8.94 hectares of land will be acquired for gardens, sports grounds. Not only that,16.96 hectares land will be acquired for public facilities works. For construction of EWS housing for economically weaker sections, 7600 houses can be constructed on 8.58 hectares of land. As a result of Surat Urban Development Authority – SUDA preliminary scheme 85 Sarthana, Pasodra, Laskana which was approved by Chief Minister for which 9.25 hectares for gardens, sports grounds facilities, 6.69 hectares as well as to construct 5100 EWS houses 5.72 hectares land will be acquired. For sale as well as to meet the cost of infrastructural facilities, including 1.73 hectares a total of approximate 23.41 hectares of land and a total of 41.08 hectares of land will be acquired in these 3 preliminary TP schemes of Surat metropolis. Also, three preliminary TP Schemes of Surat Metropolis which includes Scheme No-51 Dabholi Scheme No-27, Bhatar-Majura and Scheme No-50 Ved-Katargam a total of 6.84 hectares of land is to be made available for the purpose of sale to meet the cost of infrastructural facilities. According to the TP scheme approved a total of 19.68 hectares of land will be acquired in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's Preliminary TP Scheme 81 Lambha-Laxmipura-1. In this preliminary TP scheme, approximately 8.05 hectares of land will be available for sale to meet the cost of infrastructural facilities. Apart from this, 3.1 hectares of land will be available for gardens and playgrounds and 3.12 hectares for the construction of approximately 2700 housing units for socially and economically weaker sections. Government has also approved Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation's Preliminary TP Scheme 7 Adhewada. Due to the approval of this scheme, a total of 11.32 hectares of land will be acquired and gardens, playgrounds. And 1.57 hectares for open space, 2.81 hectares for public facilities and 4.57 hectares of land for the purpose of sale to meet the cost of infrastructural facilities. 2.94 hectares of land will also be available for construction of 2600 EWS houses in this preliminary TP No. 7 Adhewada of Bhavnagar. Apart from these three cities, Government also approved the draft TP Scheme No. 4 (Bavla) of Bavla Municipality of Ahmedabad district. A total of 54.88 hectares of land is to be acquired in this scheme. 25.64 hectares for the purpose of sale to meet the cost of infrastructural facilities Bavla draft TP scheme No.4, 7.81 hectares for open fields-gardens, 11.26 hectares of land will be available for public facilities and 8.95 hectares of land for about 8 thousand EWS houses.
