Gujarat I-T official’s family in Kanpur found living with his body for 1.5 years

KANPUR: The commissionerate police here on Friday recovered the body of a 35-year-old income tax official, Vimlesh, from his Krishnapuri residence. What was unusual was that Vimlesh had died during Covid wave some 18 months ago and his family members were also issued a death certificate, but were living with his body in the hope that Vimlesh was not dead and would rise one day. The police have dispatched the body to the Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital for medical examination with the help of a health department team. Police said Vimlesh, an employee of the IT department in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, lived in a house at Income Tax Chauraha, Krishnapuri in Rawatpur police station area of Kanpur along with his wife Mithali, who works in a co-operative bank. He died on April 22, 2021 during the Corona period. At that time, the doctors of a private hospital on Birhana Road declared him dead and also issued a death certificate. Even after this, the family members could not somehow believe that he had died and went to another hospital with the body. There also the doctors declared him brought dead. Thereafter, the family members took Vimlesh's body to their home. Believing that he would come alive someday, his wife and family members poured 'Gangajal' on the body daily. Whenever the locals inquired, they were told that Vimlesh was in coma and his treatment was continuing, police added. But when a letter was sent for investigation by Vimlesh's department after he was found to be absent for one-and-a-half year to senior district officials in Kanpur, the entire matter came to fore on Friday. W hen the health department team reached his residence along with the police, the family members refused to hand over the body, remaining firm on their stand that he was not dead. Somehow, the team convinced them and took the body into possession and sent it to Lala Lajpat Rai hospital where the doctors declared him as dead. The body was later shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination. Officials said the condition of the body had become very bad. “The flesh has dried up in the bones,” said the health department team, adding, “The body was found lying on a wooden ‘takhat’.” Chief medical officer (CMO) Alok Ranjan said, “The man was an employee of the IT department in Gujarat. For a long time, he was found to be absent. Whenever the department people used to ask the family members, they were told that he was still ill. In such a situation, the department had asked for information by sending a letter to DM Kanpur. The DM then asked us to conduct an investigation and submit a report. A three-member inquiry committee was constituted. The entire matter came to light when the team reached Vimlesh’s house on Friday.” The CMO said, “The report of the inquiry committee will come by evening. The exact timing of when the death took place will be revealed in the postmortem report.”
