With just eight days to go for the first phase of polling, electioneering is on a high in dry Gujarat. But the state police are trying to ensure that campaigning remains in high spirits without the free flow of liquor. Since the assembly election was announced on November 3, the Gujarat police have seized liquor worth Rs 10. 74 crore in the state. Till November 21, booze worth Rs2. 50 lakh has been seized the state every hour. Gujarat police officers said they have intensified action against illicit liquor businesses. “To ensure free and fair poll, it needs to be ensured there is no free flow of liquor in the state,” a senior police officer said. According to figures from the police, Gujarat seized about 1 lakh litres of country liquor and 1. 97 lakh litres of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), worth Rs 10. 74 crore in 18 days. In Septemberand October, Gujarat police averaged liquor seizures worth Rs 2. 25 lakh per hour. Liquor worth Rs 17. 07 crore was seized in October, while booze worth Rs 15. 84 crore was confiscated in September. “Between November 3 and 18, Gujarat police registered 25,291 cases and arrested 20,761 people for violating the Prohibition Act,” said a senior police officer. The officer said the number of prohibition cases and persons arrested has increased drastically. “In October, police registered 14,798 prohibition cases and arrested 14,547 persons. The number of cases under the Prohibition Act was 14,310 in September, with 14,459 persons arrested,” said the officer.
