Delhi CM Kejriwal to arrive in Gujarat tomorrow, likely to announce AAP third “guarantee”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be on a two-day tour in Gujarat this weekend, where he is expected to announce the third “guarantee” of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Chhota Udepur, a tribal belt, months ahead of the assembly elections.According to AAP functionaries in Gujarat, Kejriwal who is also national convenor of AAP is expected to arrive in Jamnagar Saturday afternoon to attend an event at the Town Hall with the business community. Later, he will reach Vadodara for a night stay. On Sunday noon, he will hold a rally at a public venue in Bodeli of Chhota Udepur.After making claims of giving “free electricity” and “employment guarantee” if chosen to power in Gujarat, Kejriwal is expected to make a third such announcement in Chhota Udepur. This will be the eighth visit of Kejriwal to Gujarat in the past four months, as his party is gearing up to form a third alternative space in Gujarat politics.In a press conference held in Ahmedabad on Thursday, Isudan Gadhvi, national joint secretary, of AAP said, “Arvind Kejriwal will attend an event where he will hold discussions with representatives of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and business communities in Jamnagar Saturday on topics such as GST and lax economy. He will then spend the night in Vadodara. The next day he will address a massive rally in Bodeli where a third guarantee will be announced which is especially for the underprivileged sections of Gujarat.'”When asked about the recent free ‘revdi’ (freebie) jibe used by the BJP against AAP, Gadhvi said, “They are trying to insult Gujaratis by referring to it as free ‘revdi’. It is public money which is going back to them.'”

Son of a migrant worker from Telangana who allegedly died in police custody in Vadodara in 2019 Wednesday approached the Gotri police station, complaining of death threat against him by one of the six accused police personnel.Salim, son of Babu Shaikh, 65, who allegedly died in custody at the Fatehgunj police station in Vadodara on December 10, 2019, was present in the Vadodara district court on Wednesday to submit an affidavit seeking expedition of the trial in the alleged custodial death of his father. In his complaint, Salim told police that the accused accosted him near the parking area and allegedly issued a death threat in presence of jail police escorting him.A resident of Nanded in Maharashtra, Salim stated, “As per the directions of the Gujarat High Court, a case has been registered against then inspector and five other personnel of Fatehgunj police station under Indian Penal Code Section 302 in the custodial death of my father, Babu Shaikh Nisar. The case is now before the court of the Principal District and Sessions Judge in Vadodara after the charge sheet was filed.”“Today (Wednesday), I was present in the sessions court… After the hearing was adjourned, I was waiting near the parking when one of the accused — Rajesh Savji Gadchar alias Raju Rabari — was passing by, escorted by police… He threatened me saying, ‘What were you able to do to me? I will be acquitted of all charges and once I am freed, I will not allow you to live… I will kill you’,” Salim said in his complaint.Salim said the officer in charge of Gadchar’s escort had to intervene and “drag away” the accused. “I was scared and could not immediately file a complaint. However, after gathering courage, I have come to file the application before police… police should conduct a probe,” Salim stated.In his affidavit before the district court, Salim said the accused have been “delaying the commencement of the trial on purpose” and then inspector DB Gohil, who is the prime accused in the case, withdrew an interim bail application in the high court in March this year, to apply for regular bail if the trial does not commence within six months.Salim’s advocate Imtiyaz Qureshi told this newspaper, “The court is yet to frame charges. The accused have been delaying the process by not appearing before the court… in every hearing held so far, one of the six accused excuses himself citing medical emergency in judicial custody. This is done so that the six-month period ends in September…”An official of the Vadodara city police said that Salim’s application was being “seriously looked into” and a necessary probe would be initiated. Nisar, who had arrived in Vadodara to sell bedsheets, allegedly went missing on December 10, 2019, after he was apprehended in Fulwadi area by personnel from Fatehgunj police station on suspicion of theft.On October 21 and November 3, the CID conducted an extensive search, dredging the Narmada main canal in Vadodara, and made multiple inquiries in villages in the catchment areas of Mahisagar river, where the accused were suspected to have burnt the body. However, it yielded no result. In a report filed before the bench in a sealed cover on December 1, 2020, the CID said that Nisar “has expired and his body is yet to be recovered”.

To check the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) among livestock in the state, the Gujarat government has formed a task force of seven members led by Kamdhenu University Vice-Chancellor Naresh Kevalva, said Animal Husbandry Minister Raghavji Patel Wednesday.In an official release giving out the update on the prevalence of the disease in Gujarat, the minister also stated that the state reported 744 new cases of LSD Wednesday morning. Of the 23 affected districts in the state, 12 did not report a single case in the past 24 hours, he added.Quoting minister Patel, the release said, “The task force is keeping a close watch on treatment in the affected districts and is providing guidance so that the disease does not spread further.”As per the release, 76,154 cows have been affected by the disease, of which 54,025 have been cured and 19,271 are under treatment. So far, 2,858 animals died due to the disease. To ensure that unaffected animals do not get infected, more than 31.14 lakh animals were been vaccinated, it said.The worst affected district is Kutch where 38,891 cases have been reported, followed by Banaskantha (8,186), Devbhumi Dwarka (7,447), Jamnagar (6,047) and Rajkot (4,359). Of the total 23 affected districts, eight districts reported 76 deaths in the past 24 hours. The release added that to expedite treatment of livestock in the affected districts, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has been assessing the situation with top officials.As the Lumpy Skin Disease has claimed over 2,700 cattle in Gujarat, the Vadodara district Additional District Magistrate has issued prohibitory orders on the transfer and movement of cattle from one village to another in the district as well as events and fairs that bring cattle in close proximity.According to Vadodara Additional District Magistrate Kuldeepsinh Jhala, the notification issued on August 8 will remain in effect for a month and has been issued as per the recommendations of the animal husbandry department.The notification, which is also in place in neighbouring districts of Vadodara which have seen the outbreak of LSD, states, “It has been decided to prohibit the transfer of animals from one village to another within a taluka, district and state. Similarly, trade of animals, fairs and exhibitions as well as any public activity or games involving animals stand prohibited until the notification is in place.”Issued under Section 188 of CrPC, the notification also prohibits any individual from leaving an infected animal on the loose or disposing of the carcass of an infected in a public place.

Gujarat records 4 Covid deaths after 5 months

AHMEDABAD: The city in the past 15 days recorded 4,228 Covid cases and 10 deaths. In the previous fortnight, the city had recorded 4,188 cases and nine deaths. Thus, there has been no major rise or fall in cases or deaths in the city. On the other hand in Gujarat, Covid cases increased by 15% from 11,577 to 13,269 and the deaths of Covid patients increased from 16 to 21, accounting for a 31% rise. The daily cases included 189 from Ahmedabad city, 61 from Vadodara city, 41 from Gandhinagar, 35 from Surat city, 33 from Vadodara, and 28 from Gandhinagar city. Active cases reached 1,769 in Ahmedabad and 5,321 in Gujarat. The state in 24 hours vaccinated 1,362 persons for the first dose and 3,308 for the second. In all, 5.43 crore have been administered the first and 5.38 crore the second dose of Covid vaccines. The state administered booster doses to 16,494 senior citizens, taking the total to 50.49 lakh. The state also administered 1.72 lakh booster doses to the 18-59 age group, taking the total to 62.34 lakh.

The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) Tuesday set up a probe into the incident of a group of farmers from Vadodara allegedly taking possession of moveable assets from the department’s office in Gandhinagar on Saturday to recover their long-pending dues as ordered by a civil court.JP Gupta, Managing Director of SSNNL, said Tuesday that the department has set up an inquiry into the matter where a group of farmers allegedly “seized computers and peripherals” from the office of the department, citing the “execution of an attachment warrant” issued by a Vadodara court over pending compensation to be handed out by the SSNNL to the farmers for land acquired in 1988 to build the Narmada canal. Gupta said, “There were multiple litigations in this particular case– which is of the several land acquisitions made by SSNNL in the 1980s. The SSNNL had even paid the compensation decided by one local court. Thereafter, the matter went to the Gujarat High Court and was referred back to the district court, which again specified the amount of compensation… The total amount that is yet to be paid is only about Rs 30 lakh as a majority of the compensation has been paid. The only reason why this sum was yet to be handed out was that the legal department was in the process of deciding on a review of the matter. There was a miscommunication otherwise SSNNL has paid nearly Rs 300 crores as land compensations for the projects so far.”Gupta added that he has sought a report from the department to ascertain if the group of farmers and their advocate indulged in vandalism in the name of the court warrant. “We had even sanctioned depositing the amount in court but there was a lag… However, even if the court has issued an attachment warrant, it cannot be executed by a group of persons and their lawyer. The court officers arrive to oversee the procedure of property attachment and we would have complied with court orders. We are yet to determine how the group of persons and their advocate gained entry and seized property… We do not know if the officers present in that office on the day have seen the court notice cited by the group. I have sought a report from the officer and we will decide our further course of action based on it,” Gupta said.A group of 25 farmers from Abhol village in Padra taluka of Vadodara district have claimed that the SSNNL owes them a total of Rs 68.92 lakh at the rate of Rs 1,625 per arey (about 100 sq metres) of land acquired in 1988. The litigants have contended that the SSNNL paid them Rs 1,400 per arey in 2005, which was Rs 225 per arey lesser than the promised compensation. The advocate of the farmers has said that the court had dismissed the SSNNL’s review petition earlier this month and once again issued attachment warrants so that farmers can seize the movable property and recover their dues by selling it.

To meet the increase in passenger demand, North Western Railway has announced a special train between Mumbai and Jaipur.According to a release, Mumbai Central-Jaipur AC superfast train (09183) will leave from Mumbai Central on August 10, Wednesday, at 10:50 pm and arrive at Jaipur at 6:30 pm on the next day.For the return journey, the train — Jaipur-Borivali AC superfast special (09184) — will terminate at Borivali of Gujarat. As per the schedule, the train will leave from Jaipur station at 7:35 pm on August 11 and reach Borivali at 12:30 pm on the following day.The station en route are Borivali, Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, Ratlam, Kota, Sawai Madhopur and Durgapur.
